With ₹2.5–20 lakh, the most realistic business ideas in Bangalore fall into two groups. The first builds on Bengaluru's ODOP strengths: ready-made garments in Bangalore Rural, handloom silk sarees in Bangalore Urban, and IT/ITES services. The second serves daily city demand, such as cloud kitchens, tiffin services and EV battery swapping. Yeh page tumhare liye hai if you want ground-level costs, not startup-hype numbers.
Searches for "business ideas in bangalore" rose +120% in 24 hours (Google Trends, fetched 27 October 2026). Nobody has confirmed why. Two likely triggers: Bengaluru topped the Hurun India U35 List 2026 with 52 of the 180 resident founders (Mumbai had 30), and two Karnataka deadlines are close. KSWDC applications close on 31 October 2026, and two ELEVATE startup grants close on 13 November 2026.

Rent reality check
Rent decides your breakeven. Ground-floor retail in Koramangala, Indiranagar or HSR Layout costs far more than in BTM, Electronic City, Hoskote or Doddaballapur. For cloud kitchens and garment units, a 300–1,000 sq ft space in the outer zones keeps fixed costs low enough to break even in 12–18 months. Prime high-street rent can push that past 30 months. Kitni rent di, usi pe sab tika hai (everything depends on the rent you pay).
Lender and consultancy blogs put a small 200–400 sq ft back-lane cloud kitchen at about ₹15–25k a month in rent, with a deposit of 2–6 months. Swiggy and Zomato take 18–30% commission per order, and they won't list you without FSSAI, GST and a trade licence. These blogs also estimate that about 25–30% of cloud kitchens close in their first year.
For the ODOP ideas, compare notes with similar districts. Our Dharmavaram silk sarees guide covers sourcing directly from weavers, and the Anantapur cotton jeans guide covers how a small garment unit makes its money. For the IT-services angle, see Gandhinagar's software ODOP.
Karnataka schemes and grants: paise kaise aayenge
- ELEVATE NxT 2026–27: up to ₹1 crore, paid in two tranches, for deeptech startups at TRL 3–8 (AI/GenAI, quantum, drones, robotics, advanced materials, space). Applications close 13 November 2026, 5 pm. Startups go through screening and in-person pitches, and you need at least 60 marks to reach the Grand Finale. Startups from outside Karnataka must shift their registered office to the state within 4 months of winning (South First). The first NxT round got 983 applications and funded 33 startups with ₹30 crore.
- ELEVATE Minorities 2026: a one-time grant of up to ₹50 lakh, with subsidised incubation, for startups led by Muslim, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh or Parsi founders. The minority founder must hold at least 51% and have a digital minority certificate. It has the same deadline. Apply through the Dept of Electronics, IT & BT. The site showed certificate errors when we checked, so try again early instead of on the last day. The main ELEVATE 2026 call (general, Aspire, Unnati and Shakti tracks) has already closed.
- Karnataka Startup Policy 2025–30: PF/ESI reimbursement of ₹3,000 per employee per month for 2 years, capped at ₹12 lakh. It also offers incubator grants of up to ₹50 lakh and a ₹75 crore "Beyond Bengaluru" seed fund. The policy targets 25,000 startups, 10,000 of them outside Bengaluru. The outlay was ₹518.27 crore at cabinet approval and was later reported as ₹570.675 crore (January 2026).
- Udyogini (KSWDC): a bank loan of up to ₹3 lakh for women's self-employment in trade and services. According to the official KSWDC page, the subsidy is 30% for general and special categories and 50% for SC/ST women (project cost ₹1–3 lakh). You must be 18–55, and the annual income limit is ₹1.5 lakh (general) or ₹2 lakh (SC/ST). You'll need proof of Karnataka residence, Aadhaar, an Aadhaar-linked bank account, a Tahsildar income certificate (plus a caste certificate for SC/ST) and a project report. Third-party sites often quote different numbers, so go by the official page. KSWDC's 2026-27 application window closes on 31 October 2026 at 5:30 pm (KSWDC). You apply at Bapuji Seva Kendra, Grama One, Bengaluru One or Karnataka One centres. We couldn't confirm from the notice PDF that Udyogini is one of the schemes in this round, so check with KSWDC before you go.
- KSFC gives term loans to MSME units. Ask about current interest-subvention terms before you plan around them.
- MUDRA loans through banks cover most non-tech ideas on this list.
How to start a business in Bangalore: 6-step roadmap
- Pick one idea from the table and run 30 days of demand tests: pre-orders, aggregator listings or one paying client.
- Get Udyam registration. It is free on the official portal.
- Register for GST. Food businesses also need FSSAI on FoSCoS (basic registration up to ₹12 lakh turnover, a state licence above that). Register under the Shops & Establishments Act too.
- Apply for a trade licence. BBMP no longer exists. Since 2 September 2025, five city corporations (Central, North, South East and West) have replaced it, under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Old BBMP trade-licence links may not work, and we couldn't confirm the current online portal address, so check with your corporation office. Seva Sindhu is also reported as a way to apply. Under the 2 February 2026 GBA circular, businesses started after 2015 on residential roads narrower than 40 ft can't get new licences. Check your road width before you sign a lease.
- Put up a nameboard that is at least 60% Kannada. News reports on the GBA's 2026-27 renewal circular list this as a condition, so confirm it with your corporation office.
- Apply for a loan or grant only after Step 1 has given you real numbers.
Thinking of a PG business?
Be careful. The Hans India reported on 26 October 2026 that 3,597 of Bengaluru's 5,480 paying-guest accommodations have no trade licence, and the GBA has sent them notices asking them to explain. Under a 2025 Urban Development Department circular, a PG can't get a licence if it is on a road narrower than 40 ft, in a building that breaks its approved plan, in a residential area, or has its kitchen in the basement. The GBA hasn't decided what it will do next.
Who should skip
Skip co-working and fitness studios if you have less than 12 months of runway. Skip cloud kitchens if you can't handle the hours, because aggregator commissions leave very little margin for mistakes. If you're still choosing a district or product, start from our ODOP business guides.
What's coming up: KSWDC applications close on 31 October 2026, and the ELEVATE windows close on 13 November 2026. Bengaluru Tech Summit 2026 ("AI & Beyond") runs 17–19 November at BIEC, with a "Future Makers" startup programme. It's a good place to meet buyers if you're pitching IT/ITES services.
Frequently asked questions
Which business is best in Bangalore with low investment?
Online tutoring (₹30k–1 lakh), a digital marketing agency (₹50k–2 lakh), a home bakery (₹80k–2.5 lakh) and an office tiffin service (₹1–3 lakh) need the least money. They can run from home or a small rented space, so rent doesn't eat your margin. These cost ranges are indicative, so check local prices before you invest.
Do I need a BBMP trade licence in 2026?
BBMP no longer exists. The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act took effect on 15 May 2025, and five city corporations replaced BBMP on 2 September 2025 under the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Renewals for 2026-27 are online only and reportedly need a nameboard that is at least 60% Kannada. Post-2015 businesses on residential roads narrower than 40 ft can't get new licences.
What is the ELEVATE grant deadline in 2026?
Both ELEVATE NxT 2026–27 (up to ₹1 crore for deeptech) and ELEVATE Minorities 2026 (up to ₹50 lakh) accept applications from 13 October to 13 November 2026, 5 pm. You apply through Karnataka's Department of Electronics, IT and BT. Apply early, because the department's website has shown certificate errors.
What is the Udyogini scheme deadline and loan amount?
Udyogini gives women a bank loan of up to ₹3 lakh, with a 30% subsidy (50% for SC/ST women), according to KSWDC's official page. KSWDC's 2026-27 applications close on 31 October 2026 at 5:30 pm, through Bapuji Seva Kendra, Grama One, Bengaluru One or Karnataka One centres. We couldn't confirm that Udyogini is in this round, so check with KSWDC.
What are the ODOP products of Bangalore?
Bangalore Rural's ODOP strength is ready-made garments, and Bangalore Urban's is handloom silk sarees. IT/ITES services are the city's biggest economic strength. A garment unit needs about ₹8–20 lakh, while a silk saree resale or D2C brand needs ₹5–15 lakh, most of it spent on stock.
Is Bangalore still a good city to start a business in 2026?
The numbers suggest it is. Bengaluru topped the Hurun India U35 List 2026 with 52 resident founders and 35 company headquarters. Karnataka's Startup Policy 2025–30 targets 25,000 new startups. High rents in prime areas and stricter licensing on narrow residential roads are the main risks, so for physical businesses look at outer zones.
