The safest business ideas in Bihar are the products your district already makes in bulk. Examples are makhana processing in Saharsa, silk in Bhagalpur and Banka, jute bags in Katihar, lemongrass or mentha oil in Aurangabad and Siwan, and dragon fruit in Kishanganj. Most of them can start with ₹2.5–20 lakh, and you can fund part of that through PMEGP, PMFME or Bihar's Udyami schemes. Searches for "business ideas in bihar" rose 60% in 24 hours (Google Trends, fetched 27 October 2026), so yeh page tumhare liye hai if you're one of those people.

Why business ideas in Bihar are trending right now

  • Gaya manufacturing city launched: on 24 October 2026, CM Samrat Choudhary launched Bihar Integrated Manufacturing City Gaya Ltd at Bodh Gaya. It is a 1,670-acre site being developed with NICDC. At the launch, 12 MoUs covering about 300 acres were signed. Reports differ on their value, putting it at either ₹4,092 crore or ₹4,200 crore. The sectors include energy, pharma, textiles, auto parts, agro and organic products, aluminium and biotech (Indian Masterminds, Patna Press).
  • Investment and new industrial land: on 23 October 2026, Industries Minister Shreyasi Singh said Bihar has received 1,091 investment proposals worth about ₹1.21 lakh crore since 2025, with about 68,807 jobs projected. These are proposals, not running projects. Land is being acquired for about 14,600 acres at 28 industrial sites in 25 districts (Indian Masterminds, Patna Press). The Mahwal leather and footwear park in Muzaffarpur opened on 15 October 2026.
  • Incentives extended: according to the Department of Industries, Bihar on X, benefits under the Bihar Industrial Investment Promotion Package (BIIPP) 2025 now run until 31 December 2026.
  • "Bihar MSME Policy 2026": KNN reported a policy launch on 8 October 2026 that targets 1 crore entrepreneur families and 25–40% of government purchasing for goods made in Bihar. We could not find this policy document on an official Bihar government page, so treat the report as unconfirmed. Two steps are confirmed. On 5 August 2026, the cabinet created 106 posts in a new MSME Directorate (Patna Press). The cabinet also turned the cluster development scheme into an MSME scheme and made BIADA the agency that builds common facility centres.
  • Mahila Rojgar Yojana: women who received ₹10,000 are looking for ideas to use it on.

Paise kaise aayenge: schemes and their status (October 2026)

  • Mukhyamantri Udyami Yojana (MMUY): up to ₹10 lakh, made up of a ₹5 lakh grant and a ₹5 lakh interest-free loan. Applicants need Bihar domicile and at least 10+2, ITI or polytechnic. Sources give the upper age limit as either 45 or 50, so check the guidelines PDF. Applications are closed. The FY 2025-26 window ran from 25 February to 23 March 2026, the lottery was held on 20 May 2026 and the final list came out on 11 June 2026. As of 28 October 2026, no FY 2026-27 window has been announced. Past cycles have opened in February, but that is a pattern, not an announcement. If you're a FY 2022-23, 2023-24 or 2024-25 beneficiary (including the additional list), upload your utilisation certificate (UC) by 10 November 2026 on udyami.bihar.gov.in. The portal's notice of 23 October 2026 calls this the "final opportunity". Helpline: 1800 345 6214 (weekdays, 10am–5pm). Don't pay any agent who promises selection.
  • Bihar Laghu Udyami Yojana: a grant of about ₹2 lakh. Its last cycle was FY 2024-25, with applications from 19 February to 5 March 2025 and the final list on 24 March 2025. No new window has been notified since.
  • PMEGP: a subsidy of 15–35% of project cost (higher for rural and special-category applicants). Projects can go up to ₹50 lakh for manufacturing. Apply on the KVIC PMEGP portal.
  • PMFME: a 35% credit-linked subsidy, up to ₹10 lakh per food unit. Apply on pmfme.mofpi.gov.in. Makhana is the ODOP product of Araria, Darbhanga, Katihar, Madhubani, Saharsa and Supaul. A Sheikhpura mushroom unit used PMFME, as reported on 26 October 2026.
  • BIIPP 2025: the state's investment incentive package, open until 31 December 2026 according to the Department of Industries. It is mainly useful for larger units planning to take land in a BIADA industrial area.

Who should start, and who should skip

Right for you if: you or your family already know the product, you can buy raw material locally, and you can wait 6–18 months to break even.

Skip if: you need income in month one. Oil distillation and dragon fruit both lock up cash for a season or longer. Also skip if your whole plan depends on a scheme window that hasn't opened.

Launch roadmap

  1. Pick the ODOP product of your own district from the table above.
  2. Register on Udyam (it's free). Food units also need an FSSAI licence.
  3. Get a DPR made that shows cost, margin and breakeven month.
  4. Apply to PMEGP or PMFME now. Don't sit waiting for MMUY.
  5. Sell locally first, then to government buyers once state procurement preferences for Bihar-made goods are officially notified.

Frequently asked questions

Which business can I start in Bihar with ₹10,000?

At ₹10,000, the realistic options are home-based ones: a small oyster mushroom setup, tilkut during the season, applique stitching or Madhubani-painted products. This is the amount women received under the Mahila Rojgar Yojana's first instalment. Start small, sell in your local market, and only scale up once you have regular buyers. Avoid machinery-heavy ideas at this level.

When will the next Mukhyamantri Udyami Yojana application open?

As of 28 October 2026, no FY 2026-27 window has been announced. The FY 2025-26 applications ran from 25 February to 23 March 2026, the lottery was held on 20 May 2026 and the final list came out on 11 June 2026. Past cycles opened in February, but watch udyami.bihar.gov.in for the official notice. Meanwhile, PMEGP and PMFME accept applications all year.

What is the last date to upload the Udyami Yojana utilisation certificate?

MMUY beneficiaries from FY 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25, including the additional list, must upload their utilisation certificate on udyami.bihar.gov.in by 10 November 2026. The portal's notice dated 23 October 2026 calls this the final opportunity. The earlier deadline was 30 June 2026, so don't expect another extension.

What does Bihar MSME Policy 2026 offer small businesses?

KNN reported a launch on 8 October 2026 that targets 1 crore entrepreneur families and a 25 to 40 percent government purchase share for Bihar-made goods. However, we could not find the policy on an official government page, so treat it as unconfirmed. What is confirmed: 106 posts were created in a new MSME Directorate, and BIIPP 2025 incentives run until 31 December 2026.

Which business ideas in Bihar are best for food processing?

Makhana in Saharsa, mushroom in Arwal and Jehanabad, tilkut in Gaya, banana chips in Vaishali and Sonachur rice in Buxar are strong food picks, because the raw material is grown locally. The PMFME scheme gives a 35 percent credit-linked subsidy of up to ₹10 lakh per unit. You will also need an FSSAI licence before you start selling.

Are the setup costs and margins in this list official?

No. They are our rough estimates for a small unit, meant to help you compare ideas. Actual costs depend on your location, scale, machinery and land. Before you apply for any loan or subsidy, get a detailed project report prepared that shows your real costs, expected margins and breakeven month.
