With ₹2.5–20 lakh, the transport business ideas that make sense are small: one vehicle or a small fleet. Think e-rickshaws, a mini truck for local logistics, parcel delivery, a school van, or a refrigerated van serving a farm or seafood cluster. Most of these can be financed with a Mudra loan. Each one has its own permit and fuel-cost maths, and yeh page tumhare liye hai if you want those numbers before you buy anything.

Searches for "transport business ideas" went up 130% in the 24 hours to 27 October 2026. Diesel is expensive (about ₹95/L in Delhi in July 2026), and new schemes like PARIVARTAN have more people asking what a truck or an EV really costs to run.

12 transport business ideas by budget

These are rough guides from lenders. Aditya Birla Capital puts a courier business at ₹2–10 lakh, a taxi at about ₹5 lakh per vehicle, and specialised or refrigerated freight at ₹15–60 lakh. The vehicle costs in the table are approximate market prices. Get a quote from your local dealer before you decide.

Paise kaise aayenge: Mudra, PMEGP and sample EMIs

  • Mudra (PMMY): Kishore covers ₹50,000–5 lakh, Tarun covers ₹5–10 lakh, and Tarun Plus goes up to ₹20 lakh if you've already repaid a Tarun loan. You can use it to buy a commercial vehicle.
  • PMEGP: its negative list has long left out most transport vehicles. Ask your District Industries Centre before you count on it.
  • Commercial vehicle loans from NBFCs such as Shriram Finance are the usual route for trucks.

Sample EMIs (the interest rates are assumptions; your lender will quote its own):

  • ₹1.5 lakh at 12% for 3 years: about ₹4,980/month
  • ₹5 lakh at 11% for 5 years: about ₹10,870/month
  • ₹15 lakh at 10.5% for 5 years: about ₹32,240/month

Diesel makes up roughly 40–50% of a truck's running cost. Your monthly profit is what's left after EMI, fuel, driver salary, insurance and maintenance. If the van isn't busy at least 20 days a month, the numbers usually don't work.

Subsidies and tax cuts in 2026

  • PM E-DRIVE (e-trucks): ₹5,000 per kWh or 10% of the ex-factory price, whichever is lower. N2 trucks are capped at ₹2.7 lakh. You have to scrap an old diesel truck to claim it. The scheme runs until 31 March 2028, or until the money runs out. Details are on the Ministry of Heavy Industries site. The 2028 extension covers e-trucks, e-buses, e-ambulances and charging, not e-rickshaws, so check your state's EV policy for e-rickshaw subsidies. The e-bus money goes to state and city transport undertakings, not small operators.
  • Delhi N1 e-trucks: there is a separate state subsidy at evsubsidy.delhi.gov.in.
  • PARIVARTAN (Delhi-NCR only): this scheme pays to replace trucks and buses that are BS-IV or older. It offers up to 100% motor vehicle tax concession for 10 years, 5% interest subvention, an OEM discount of at least 8%, and fuel vouchers or EV aid. See the PIB release and register on the PARIVARTAN portal.
  • GST 2.0: from 22 September 2025, GST on trucks and buses fell from 28% to 18%. According to finance blogs, GST on third-party insurance for goods carriages fell to 5%. Check that with CBIC.
  • Bike taxis: the July 2025 aggregator guidelines leave it to each state. Karnataka saw a court-ordered suspension. Confirm the rules with your RTO first.

Launch roadmap for a transport business

  1. Lock in a customer first, such as a school, distributor, processor or delivery company.
  2. Register your business on Udyam, and on GST if your turnover needs it.
  3. Get your loan sanctioned, then buy the vehicle with commercial (yellow-plate) registration through Parivahan.
  4. Apply for a state permit, or a National Permit for interstate trucking. More than 24.4 lakh authorisations have been issued since April 2025.
  5. Generate e-way bills for goods loads, and keep a fuel-and-trip log from day one.

Who should skip this

Skip transport if you can't handle the EMI from savings for 3–4 slow months, or if you have no fixed client. Also skip it if you plan to hand the vehicle to a driver and never check the trip log. For product-led ideas instead, browse our district-by-district ODOP guides.

Frequently asked questions

Which transport business is best to start with ₹2.5 lakh?

With about ₹2.5 lakh, the realistic options are a single e-rickshaw, an e-loader for mandi goods, or a small bike-courier setup tied to an e-commerce company. Each costs roughly ₹1.5–3.5 lakh. A Mudra Kishore loan (₹50,000–5 lakh) can cover the gap, so keep some savings aside for insurance, permits and two or three months of EMI.

Can I get a Mudra loan to buy a commercial vehicle?

Yes. Mudra loans can be used to buy commercial transport vehicles. Kishore covers ₹50,000–5 lakh, Tarun covers ₹5–10 lakh, and Tarun Plus goes up to ₹20 lakh if you have already repaid a Tarun loan. Interest rates depend on the bank. A quotation from a vehicle dealer and a simple project report help the loan get sanctioned faster.

Does PMEGP give subsidy for buying a truck or taxi?

Usually not. PMEGP's negative list has long excluded most transport vehicles, with only a few narrow exceptions. Rules can change, so confirm with your District Industries Centre or the KVIC office before you apply. For vehicles, Mudra or an NBFC commercial vehicle loan is usually the simpler route.

What is the PM E-DRIVE subsidy for electric trucks?

PM E-DRIVE pays ₹5,000 per kWh of battery or 10% of the ex-factory price, whichever is lower. N2 trucks are capped at ₹2.7 lakh and the overall maximum is ₹9.6 lakh. You must scrap an old diesel truck and show the certificate of deposit. The scheme runs until 31 March 2028, or until its money runs out.

What permits do I need to start a transport business in India?

You need commercial registration for the vehicle, a state permit for local routes or a National Permit for interstate goods, valid commercial insurance, and a fitness certificate. On the business side, register on Udyam and get GST registration if your turnover requires it. Goods trips above the threshold value need e-way bills.
