Market reality 2026: why now, or why not now?
Tailwinds
- India's single-use plastic ban has created demand for alternatives.
- Companies need sustainable packaging to meet EPR and ESG goals.
- Buyers increasingly prefer eco-friendly products.
- Bamboo, jute and agricultural waste are cheap raw materials.
Headwinds and traps
- Eco products usually cost more than plastic.
- Enforcement of plastic bans is uneven.
- Greenwashing claims make buyers sceptical.
- Quality can be inconsistent.
What changed in 2026
Plastic bans and EPR rules have made sustainable packaging a business need, not just a preference. In 2026, eco brands grow by selling to businesses that must meet rules, and by making products that match plastic on price and quality.
Plastic bans and brand sustainability goals push demand for paper, bagasse and seaweed-based packaging. Food delivery and D2C brands are large buyers. Price and quality must be close to plastic.
Real setup costs and unit economics
